THE BELFRY’S EXECUTIVE HEAD CHEF WINS ‘HOTEL CHEF OF THE YEAR’ AWARD

The Belfry Hotel & Resort’s Executive Head Chef Robert Bates took home top honours in The Caterer’s Hotel Cateys 2018 Awards this week as he won ‘Hotel Chef of the Year (more than 250 covers)’. The awards ceremony took place at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge in London on Friday 23rd November.    

The awards saw Executive Head Chef Robert Bates, who joined The Belfry in December 2013, fight off three other top chefs from across the UK to win the prestigious ‘Hotel Chef of the Year’ category. He was recognised for his key achievements during his time at The Belfry, which include his revolutionary culture change meaning team retention and morale is at its highest, and achieving a 5-star food hygiene rating which is no easy task in such a large and busy operation and is down to empowerment and coaching of the team. The achievements are a testimony to Robert Bates’ leadership which is reflected in the first-class culinary experience each and every guest receives when visiting The Belfry.   

Since their launch in 2007, the Caterer’s Hotel Cateys Awards have celebrated the most successful hotels, hoteliers and hotel employees across the UK. Nearly 70 judges used their expertise and industry knowledge to select the top individual who showcased excellence and worked tirelessly to make sure they deliver an exceptional guest experience, day in, day out.

THE BELFRY WINS PRESTIGIOUS SALES & MARKETING AWARD

The Belfry Hotel & Resort has scooped top honours at the prestigious Birmingham Post Business Awards in the ‘Sales & Marketing’ category. The award recognises The Belfry’s excellence in innovation and creativity, as well as its ability to find solutions for sales and marketing challenges.   

Held on Thursday 1st November at the ICC, the Birmingham Post Business Awards celebrate success, recognise achievement and highlight the innovative people and companies in Birmingham. The award judges, Birmingham City University, praised The Belfry for their passion, dedication and innovation throughout all their sales and marketing activity.

The Belfry Hotel & Resort continues to wow golfers from across the globe as it was named ‘World’s Best Golf Hotel’ at the 2018 World Golf Awards held at La Manga, Spain, over the weekend.   

The awards ceremony saw The Belfry fight off other leading golf hotels to win the prestigious awards. Chosen by golfers from all over the world, the awards recognised The Belfry’s reputation as a world-class leading resort. Meanwhile the Brabazon – the only course to have hosted The Ryder Cup on four occasions – was once again praised for its unrivalled conditioning and layout, winning ‘England’s Best Golf Course 2018’. THE BELFRY CELEBRATES LEAD UP TO RYDER CUP

As the only venue in the world to have hosted the Ryder Cup on four occasions, The Belfry Hotel & Resort is celebrating the lead up to the 2018 Ryder Cup, taking place at Le Golf National in Paris from 28th – 30th September 2018. As the excitement builds, guests and golfers can enjoy a range of activities across the resort including on the world famous Brabazon golf course. 

In addition to the host of Ryder Cup memorabilia on display, guests will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with the 2016 Ryder Cup Team Europe Buggy and be in with a chance of winning a round on The Brabazon through social media competitions. Guests will also be able to have a closer look at the Tour Bags of 5 past Ryder Cup captains ‐ Darren Clarke, Nick Faldo, Colin Montgomerie, Paul McGinley and Jose Maria Olazabal, all located in The Golf Shop, the largest on‐site outlet in Europe. The Belfry has continued to build upon its unrivalled Ryder Cup history and heritage with its unique Ryder Cup themed Mini Golf Course. The Belfry Hotel & Resort has had another outstanding result at the annual World Travel Awards Europe Gala Ceremony, which took place on Friday 30th June in Athens, Greece, cementing its reputation as a world-class leading resort.

 

Regarded as ‘the Oscars’ of the travel industry, the awards acknowledge winners that truly set the benchmark to the rest of the industry and reward the top venues and as such The Belfry Hotel & Resort has proven it’s at the forefront of the conference and resort market once again.

THE BELFRY APPOINTS CHRIS EIGELAAR AS GENERAL MANAGER

The Belfry Hotel & Resort, named as England’s Leading Resort at the World Travel Awards, has appointed Chris Eigelaar as General Manager. Four‐time host of the Ryder Cup and voted as England’s Best Golf Hotel and Best Golf Course at the World Golf Travel Awards, The Belfry remains one of Europe’s premium golf and leisure destinations. 

Originally from South Africa, Eigelaar brings over 22 years to the renowned West Midlands resort. He has excelled in a career in leading hotels and resorts across the UK including DoubleTree by Hilton, Locke Hotels, Sofitel and QHotels.  “It’s a real honour to be managing The Belfry and to be able to work with such an experienced team who are renowned for providing world‐class services.

SILVER AT THE INTERNATIONAL SALON CULINAIRE

The Belfry Hotel & Resort is pleased to announce that Apprentice Chef Ben Webster, from its signature Ryder Grill restaurant, recently took home a silver medal at the International Salon Culinaire competition.

The International Salon Culinaire is the UK’s largest and most prestigious Chef competition programme. Showcasing terrific skills and talent within the culinary industry, the contest comprises of four competition categories; Salon Display, Skills Theatre, Live Theatre and La Parade des Chefs, the latter being the category in which Webster won silver in the College Canapé Competition.
 
The dish that ultimately brought The Belfry man his success was a curry macaroon, goat’s cheese mousse and mango chutney gel that came from some rigorous brain-storming with Ryder Grill Head Chef Ryan Swift. Together they came up with a Birmingham street food theme, inspired by the fact the Balti Curry was originally invented in the West Midlands.
 
 “It is a real honour to win the Silver Medal at this year’s International Salon Culinaire. The quality on show from all the teams taking part was incredible, which makes this even more special” remarked Webster afterwards. “The competition has massively improved my organisational skills and has changed my outlook on the importance of being on the ball and ready for anything.’’ 
 
Having been at The Belfry for over two years now, Webster has gained experience around all sections of The Ryder Grill, as well as working in pastry banqueting and afternoon tea departments at the award-winning resort. Under the tutelage of Head Chef Ryan Swift and Head Pastry Chef Dean Cole, Webster has certainly learned from two of the best around.
 
“The Belfry has massively improved my culinary career in many aspects” added Webster, “I've learnt speed is crucial whilst still maintaining the highest possible standards. The resort has really helped me grow as both a Chef and an individual and if someone told me two years ago I would be where I am now, I wouldn't have believed them.”

The Hotel Marketing Awards ceremony – which takes place on 20th March at the W London Leicester Square – celebrates unrivalled success in the hospitality industry for marketers. As part of the ‘Best Fully Integrated Marketing Campaign’ award, The Belfry has been championed for its integrated campaign between July & August last year that helped bring record numbers of families to the resort.
 
Thanks to innovative use of standout advertising – both online and print – inspiring social media content, clever Pay-Per-Click and SEO campaigns, prominent media coverage and strategic third-party partnerships, The Belfry’s marketing campaign was proven to significantly influence buying decisions across the family market.

The awards – which take place on 19th April – celebrate and showcase the best of business and enterprise throughout the Birmingham region. As part of ten awards handed out, the ‘Excellence in Hospitality’ and ‘Sales & Marketing’ accolades recognise businesses that have set exceptionally high standards in their respective categories.

The Belfry’s nomination for both awards reflects the recent ‘Gold Flag’ status it received from the 59club, the market-leader in performance and customer service measurement for golf, leisure, spa and events. In August last year, The Belfry was ranked in the top three European golf destinations for customer service following a monthly mystery visit by 59club.

THE BELFRY SCOOPS TWO MAJOR INDUSTRY ACCOLADES

The Belfry Hotel & Resort has further underlined its status as one of the world’s leading golf resorts after it  was recognised with ‘Gold Flag’ status at the 59club awards ceremony, whilst its Director of Courses & Estates Angus Macleod was also named Greenkeeper of the Year.
 

The ceremony rewarded those destinations and personnel within golf who have shown exemplary customer service ratings following the 59club’s extensive mystery shopping assessments throughout 2017. The Belfry became one of only nine resorts across the world to achieve Gold Flag status, with its overall venue score up by some 11% from 2016. The spiritual home of The Ryder Cup scored particularly strongly within the ‘Tee Time Reservations’, ‘Arrival in Shop’, ‘Locker Rooms’ and ‘Food & Beverage’ categories.

“Our entire team have worked tirelessly over the last year to ensure the customer experience at The Belfry is as good as anywhere in the world,” said The Belfry’s Director of Golf Chris Reeve. “The Gold Flag award is testament to our expert team who continue to provide that VIP experience from the moment our guests book their visit right through to when they leave the resort.

Meanwhile, The Belfry’s Director of Courses & Estates, Angus Macleod was named ‘Greenkeeper of the Year’ at the 59club awards ceremony. Overseeing a supreme 96.1% score for The Brabazon within the ‘On Course Presentation’ category, Macleod was recognised for his meticulous management of The Belfry’s famous, 4time Ryder Cup course.

“I’m delighted to win this award and would like to pay special thanks to my incredible greenkeeping team at The Belfry, who allow me to take a strategic role in the conditioning of our golf courses,” said Macleod. “Whatever day of the year, golfers coming to The Belfry demand a Ryder Cup‐standard experience, so the level of detail required in our maintenance is up there with the very best in the world.”

THE BELFRY LAUNCHES NEW TASTING MENU SERIES

The Belfry Hotel & Resort is set to tantalise the taste buds of both locals and visitors to its signature Ryder Grill restaurant as it launches a mouth‐watering Tasting Menu Series running from February to December this year.

Recently appointed Head Chef, Ryan Swift will bring fresh culinary flair to the popular evenings with a selection of sumptuous six‐course menus, all packed with the finest seasonal produce.

The first event of the series will take place on Thursday 8th February where six delicious courses will be available for just £45 per person. Served in The Belfry’s iconic Ryder Grill – which boasts the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence and AA Rosette – the evenings will run on Thursday evenings throughout the year, providing the perfect opportunity to sample a range of the restaurant’s a la carte flavours, all in one sitting. 

Hoping to delight diners with his newly‐designed taster menus, Swift commented: “I’m really looking forward to our taster evenings. It’s provided me with a real opportunity to quite literally bring my creativity to the table and create some truly unique dishes. I’m really excited to see our diners’ reactions to them.”
