Five star plans for world famous Belfry

Monday 25th June 2007 The Quinn Group, owners of The Belfry, today announce plans for a major redevelopment of the world-famous golf and leisure venue. When completed, The Belfry will become an internationally renowned resort and the only five-star hotel in the Midlands.

The Quinn Group’s plans centre on creating a new Belfry hotel with accommodation comprising 500 luxurious rooms and a new leisure complex including swimming pool, gym, spa and treatment facilities.

The golfing experience will be enhanced with world-class new facilities, building on the established reputation of The Belfry as the home of the Ryder Cup in England. The proposals also include plans to replace the existing PGA facilities within the overall site.

Multi-function facilities to cater for a wide range of business, sporting and leisure events will also be incorporated into the new development.

The General Manager of The Belfry, Nigel Gray, said: “These proposals for The Belfry mark a major step forward in our aim of providing customers with a world-class experience. These exciting plans to create the only five-star hotel in the Midlands offer an opportunity to develop a new hotel that provides state-of-the-art facilities, whilst retaining the charm our customers associate with the ivy-clad façade of the hotel. Together, these plans provide us with the ability to offer a unique package to customers in an iconic location, whilst also ensuring we improve our environmental impact on the local area.”

To ensure the development is in keeping with the heritage of the course, there are plans for a golf clubhouse, which will reflect the iconic façade of the existing hotel building and complement the new hotel development to its rear.

There will also be a focus on the environmental credentials of the venue. Construction would incorporate the latest building technologies and the hotel’s carbon emissions will be reduced. Materials generated onsite will also be utilised during construction.

The new hotel will be set in newly landscaped surroundings, improving the overall ecology of the area and providing a stunning backdrop for the new development. The reduction in the hotel’s footprint and provision of underground car parking will also be of benefit to the environment.

In July, there will be a series of public exhibitions in villages and towns surrounding The Belfry in order for the public to view the plans in detail and give their views. A planning application for the development will be submitted later in the Summer.

Conveniently located close to the M42 and Birmingham International Airport, The Belfry is situated in Wishaw, West Midlands.
